Greek Language Certification

The Greek language Certificate is an important part of your application for a permanent residence permit, it costs around 90€ and €100

✔ Either A2 level + Greek history, and civilization

✔ Or B1 level

🔍Where to take the Exam

To obtain a permanent residence permit, you can take the Greek language test at 2 authorised places:[Reference]

✔ The General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning ( Link)

Pros:

  • They offer A2 level + Greek history, and civilization and B1
  • The advantage of passing the test at the General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning is the possibility of taking the A2 exam, which is easier and more straightforward than the B1 exam.

Cons:

  • There is no guarantee that there will be a test each year and even if the centre opens its doors to candidates, it doesn’t mean that you will pass the test in the same year, you may be put on the waiting list and it will be your turn next year.

✔ Centre for the Greek Language – Only B1 (Link)

Pros:

  • They have many Centres and you can easily find one close to where you live.
  • They offer 2 tests per year
  • You can contact them via email and if they have available places they can add you to the list
  • You can eve pass the test in your home country as they have centers around the world

Cons:

  • The exams are quite difficult.
  • They don’t offer Greek history, and civilization
  • It took 2 months to get the results. It took another 2 months to get the diploma.

🔍Where to study

You can study Greek for free:

  • Visit the KEP closest to where you live and ask them about Greek classes.
  • Greek Council for Refugees (GCR – Ελληνικό Συμβούλιο για τους Πρόσφυγες) [gcr.gr]
  • SolidarityNow [solidaritynow.org]
  • Caritas Hellas [ caritas.gr ]
  • Melissa Network (for migrant women) [melissanetwork.org ]
  • Generation 2.0 RED [g2red.org]
  • NGOs like METAdrasi [metadrasi.org]

⚠️ Important Notes:

I would recommend starting with paid lessons at the The Modern Greek Language Teaching Center based on personal experience, this is the best place to start learning the basics, the 3 months course can be enough for the A2 exam. ( €380, 15hours per week for 3 months)

Use free Version of Duolingo ( There are a couple of unused words, but it will help you a lot with the memorisation of a lot of words)
